I have to be honest, about six years ago I picked up book 1, which I think was “Crusader” and after about 60 pages I gave up because I couldn’t stand reading the term “tier 1 SEAL” every other paragraph. But eventually in mid fall last year, that time when the publishing world goes to sleep, I tried again with book 4, and after reading that, I finished that trilogy, then the first trilogy and the sons of valor books. My point is that out of 7 books in the series this is the only one with a complete arc, and I feel like will earn Andrews and Wilson more readers.The book opens with Dempsey having disappeared six months prior, and the rest of Ember having no idea where he is or was, and if he’s alive or dead. While we find Dempsey in a Russian prison trying to hold on to his sanity.From there a mission is laid out before him as he travels the path, without knowing where that path ends, having nothing to depend on other than his finely honed combat skills, instincts, and whit.Dempsey and the rest of Ember have some debts they must repay, and nothing is going to stop them.The book is paced well, and can be read as a standalone.The things I didn’t like. I didn’t think product placement was a thing in novels but these guys shill for Sig Sauer in a manner that is embarrassing. I mean it’s really bad. Also there was ZERO character introduction or development with the new team members. Your imaginations determine their personalities, because they are always present, while never contributing to the group dynamic. This book came out the same day as the new Gray Man, and a week after the new orphan X book. Read those first for sure, but this book is worth your time.
