He is quietly attached to Dylan, but he knows him well enough to know that Dylan has to be free to do his own thing. He also has a penchant for stealing, yet he wants for nothing. As a kleptomaniac, having the chief of police for a father comes in awfully handy. The real family money, however, comes from his father’s partnership with Dylan’s mother, running guns and drugs. Ali’s father also gets called into Dylan’s father’s office from time to time to hush up the goings on at the university. Unfortunately, Alistair and his buddies, Dylan and Felix, find themselves in trouble quite often. Alistair might seem timid, especially in comparison to his friends, but he is very capable of following their lead and getting caught in the middle of sticky situations.When the Skull & Serpent boys spot Penelope on campus, they know she is going to be trouble for them. They hate her to the point of obsession, and they will make her pay her dues. She claims she wants to find the person responsible for making her sister choose to jump, and they see it as an opportunity to lure her into an agreement. They will help her find the person responsible, but the price for their help is anything and everything they want from her. They will use and debase her as they please until the person responsible is found. The foursome embarks on a dark and dirty journey marked with blood. The trigger warnings should be taken seriously for this book. It goes beyond some of the recent books by this author. There is violence and a lot of kink, but the suicide angle might prove most difficult for some as the theme comes up throughout. There are two things about it that caught my attention. First, there seems to be a timeline issue that makes Eve’s family, as well as the boys, come across as unmoved. Penelope is angry, certainly, but I do not really sense her grief. Her parents come across as callous as well. Although the story begins in earnest just a few weeks after Eve’s death, it is later vaguely written about as if it had been further back. It is a little confusing, and it feels like nobody in the story is capable of grieving the loss. It is entirely possible that the utter insanity of this story is the explanation, but it still feels off to me. The second thing that caught my attention was the absolute conviction that someone was responsible for Eve’s suicide. Eve made a choice, though it didn’t feel like a choice to her. She also had a known history of depression and a suicide pact prior to heading off to college. Whatever happened to her did not happen in a bubble. She was already broken when she entered into that situation, so the blame fixation was difficult for me to buy into – particularly given the punishment Penelope had in mind. It was especially difficult to buy into because I felt like Eve did have alternatives. She had a family she could have turned to who would have had her back and would not have been intimidated. Second guessing and what-ifs are always going to be the case, granted, but I don’t think it is normally as simple as one bad actor being to blame for that choice, and in particular, when there is a preexisting history at play. The entire story pivots on this need for revenge, so this issue comes up frequently.There are a few other issues that merit mention. First, Dylan’s persuasion is murky. It shifts during the story, so it is hard to follow. It had me taking extra time on occasion, to look back, to see and compare what was said earlier about him. It doesn’t completely reconcile, but I concluded and went with the notion that was implied earlier on, that Dylan loves girls (he later supposedly loves guys too), but that he has experimented with Alistair – and he considers that different than being into guys. He lives in denial, as Felix points out. Felix is straight but shares, as they all do. As for Alistair, he is clearly bi but stuck on Dylan. Second, Dylan’s character is also confusing when it comes to his affection for Penelope. He is supposedly obsessed with her, but he repeatedly behaves in such a way that would imply differently. He seems unchanged for quite a while. The biggest hint that his behavior has changed is Alistair’s observation of Dylan. For the longest time, no matter what Dylan might have thought about Penelope, his behavior showed that he was not at all hung up on her. Third, Eve is said to be the complete opposite of Penelope, but later they are supposedly alike. Next, there are a number of similar instances in which details are confusing or contradictory. I read the ARC version, granted, so it could have been cleaned up by the time of publication.Penelope is looking for revenge after her sister’s death, but Felix, Dylan, and Alistair have their own plans for her in this insane story. Set in Spine Ridge University where the criminal elites send their children, secrets abound. Violent and over-the-top steamy, this dark romance is not for the faint of heart. The story is plot-driven. Sit back and enjoy this deep dive into violence and dark desire. The story is written in first person. The POV alternates between Penelope, Felix, Dylan, and Alistair. I guess the best insight I can give on what I thought of the book is to say that I read 780 pages in two days....two days people! There are times I can't finish a three hundred page book in that time frame but I did and I am so glad I had the time to do it because I did not want to put this book down at any moment.Spine Ridge University is not your typical college, it's a place to study business for the very wealthy and connected to attend. It's also the place where Penelope Richard's sister committed su1cide, so Pen transfers to the school with the sole intent of finding out who was bullying her to the point where she decided to end her life.The first people Penelope wants to look into are three guys that are part of the Skull & Serpent Society, one of the many fraternities that are on campus, Felix Rivera, Dylan Caruso, and Alistair King, there was something in her sisters journal that has her believing they are behind it and if not they know who is. Things get rather interesting when the four of them make a deal to find the bully, especially since the three guys are pretty big bullies themselves.So many twists, some may shock you some may not, but what will not come as a shock is the chemistry between the four...h0ly hotness batman!
