At first i did not like this book especially because of forced repetition of scripted this and that. It felt as the author is trying to program the reader in believing of his understanding of the world.However the next chapters are more practical and i think they benefit a lot to aspiring entrepreneur.I have my own company and it helped me look at things differently, sometimes this is all it takes. I don't mind his rants because it is the same thought process I feel on a day to day basis in a dead end job going nowhere, so in this way he identifies with the very real and painful frustrations of the reader that exists in the scripted world, but offers solutions to exit on the ramp to the unscripted life. I also liked the analogy of business where you have to step up and swing, experience strikeouts, foul balls, and failures. I do not believe this is emphasized enough in business. The action and adjust formula also quickly blows through the one stop shop false solutions that litter the internet. I would only add that the stakes are much greater in this game.In fact that is my only complaint, but the book added so much value that I did not knock it down a star.GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN'My complaint is that the stakes are routinely under emphasized but it is the reason why so few people go after the unscripted life. There is a very real chance of complete failure and even death. Is this overstated? I don't think so. The saying 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' may be corny, but it is true. The stakes are so high, either trying and failing to the point of irreversible damage, or running back to the scripted life, that few dare to even try. There is a very real possibility that you have to decide between the unscripted life or die trying. The only reason I say this is because I came very close to homelessness, running out of money, and having no where to turn. It is a reality of ditching the job and surviving on your own. It is scary, the bottom does drop out, and you have to sink or swim. This is the part that is not emphasized enough. You better be ready. People may say, why don't you just get a job as back up? It just does not work that way for many reasons. Sometimes a job is just not available, and sometimes leaving the scripted life is for good. MJ kind of pushed back and said getting a job and learning the business is a good thing, but some of us are not in a job we want to take into the unscripted realm.WARNING! THIS RIDE IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!Substantial risks are not emphasized nearly enough. Damage can be real and lasting. Calculated risks are not always calculated perfectly, and sometimes there is no back-up. So be ready for that. Maybe MJ should put a warning label that the unscripted life is not for the faint of heart. That is why so few people try it. There is a reason people walk into the assembly line of the scripted life, and only the truly brave and sometimes lucky exit.YES - LUCK IS A FACTORIncidentally, luck is also under emphasized. Yes, MJ and others did take the risks and experience the failures to get where they are, but everyone, from Bill Gates to Zuckerberg always say luck plays a role. It just does. It is the timing, the right wave at the right time.Fastlane Forum and Fifty Shades of Wasted TimeFinally, MJ should red flag some of the dumb ideas on his forum. People can get sucked into garbage. Take the romance writing thread, for example. After Fifty Shades of Grey, people started writing romance books to jump on the billionaire romance bandwagon. Then in his book he talks about what he thought of the book. Well, say so on the forum! Don't let a thread like that run its course. I read the book because of his forum, and now my Amazon history is polluted with billionaire romance novels. Not to mention I wasted several hours of my life reading the book and others recommended, and months studying and following the industry and actually writing several novels. Are you really going to become a millionaire selling 99 cent ebooks at 30% royalties on billionaire romance? This is one of the most popular threads on the forum! Such the thread down. There is too much to sift through on his forum to figure out what works and what does not. It would have helped to know MJ thought this was a crappy idea to begin with.Also why do the posers on the FF wear gaudy gold chains, showing pics of a guy lighting a cigar with burning cash, or posing next to cars they don't own? Of course, there is also the fist pump! The primal scream of victory etched in various facial expressions or favorite celebrities, athletes, and movie heroes! The "mo' money" gangster sign flash, and the guy without his shirt on. The author challenges conventional wisdom and provides guideposts that we can use for an UNSCRIPTED existence which means doing whatever you want, wherever and whenever.Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones, who sang the lyric, I can’t get no satisfaction, captures a lot of the spirit of part I and part 2 of this book. MJ provides a diagnosis of the human predicament with vivid examples that we can all relate to. The author poses two questions that I found thought-provoking and his answers were spot-on: how do you feel on Sunday night or Monday morning?, What is the greatest con of the civilized world? Both questions made me think about my predicament and the myths that we follow or accept as the facts of life. For instance, who came up with the rule that Saturday and Sunday are for relaxing while work occurs Monday through Friday or retirement happens at sixty-five after 40 years of doing what you don’t like.Once you become aware and understand our predicament, then the author provides a framework that can cure us. I was skeptical about this framework because of how complex it was and the odds of success. But after, researching other successful entrepreneurs like Phil Knight and Scott Adams, I realized that MJ has provided the most complete guide for entrepreneurial success. There isn’t a magical checklist we can use that will provide the path for successfully starting a business but MJ’s framework can improve our odds. The Unscripted Entrepreneurial Framework (TUNEF) is the prescription for our predicament and represents the bulk of the book. There were five key takeaways for me:1. Change your head will change your results - we have been brainwashed by the media and many other sources to have delusional and limiting beliefs that prevent us from transforming ourselves. For example, if you believe “entrepreneurship is risky,” you’ll avoid starting a business. But, if you can change your identity and actually believe that “I am a successful entrepreneur” than you have a shot.2. Process-principle - extraordinary results require an extraordinary effort consisting of daily habits, routines, and sacrifices. For example, when Michael Phelps won 9 gold medals in the 2008 Olympics and makes millions in endorsement afterwards, most of us only see his successful outcome. But behind his wins was a grueling process that required rigorous training and sacrifices. So, to be successful entrepreneurs we need to modify our habits and daily routine.3. The Commandment of Need - Need defines our opportunity in the market place. The author said think about the market as “a spoiled brat, narrowly-minded and singular in its purpose….Its laser-like focus is centered on one fundamental truth: What value are you to me?” By reframing the market as a spoiled brat, I’ve become more aware of the need of others.4. Sell or be sold: “If you don’t have any ideas, learn how to sell. Selling and all of its cousins (marketing, copywriting, negotiation) are the most important skills, no matter what your business is… The best sales secret isn’t about sales at all. It’s peer testimonials and reviews.”5. Comparative immunity - Abstaining from the unwinnable game of comparison which is the drive for more when more isn’t needed. We tend to focus on what’s missing such as the person driving a Mercedes while your driving a Subaru or the person with the perfect nose while yours is crooked. I agree with the author that you will never find happiness if you are constantly comparing yourself with others because the finish line always moves.I highly recommend “Unscripted” because it has allowed me to better understand my predicament, see the world differently, and provide a backtested framework for entrepreneurship.
