In this moving, emotional narrative of love and resilience, a young couple confronts the start of Argentina's Dirty War in the 1970s, and a daughter searches for truth twenty years later.New York, 1998. Santiago Larrea, a wealthy Argentine diplomat, is holding court alongside his wife, Lila, and their daughter, Paloma, a college student and budding jewelry designer, at their annual summer polo match and soiree. All seems perfect in the Larreas’ world—until an unexpected party guest from Santiago's university days shakes his usually unflappable demeanor. The woman's cryptic comments spark Paloma’s curiosity about her father’s past, of which she knows little. When the family travels to Buenos Aires for Santiago's UN ambassadorial appointment, Paloma is determined to learn more about his life in the years leading up to the military dictatorship of 1976. With the help of a local university student, Franco Bonetti, an activist member of H.I.J.O.S.—a group whose members are the children of the desaparecidos, or the “disappeared,” men and women who were forcibly disappeared by the state during Argentina’s “Dirty War”—Paloma unleashes a chain of events that not only leads her to question her family and her identity, but also puts her life in danger. In compelling fashion, On a Night of a Thousand Stars speaks to relationships, morality, and identity during a brutal period in Argentinian history, and the understanding—and redemption—people crave in the face of tragedy.Includes a Reading Group Guide.

It seems only natural to give a book called On a Night of a Thousand Stars the maximum number of stars! But Andrea Clark's debut novel truly earned it. Common literary wisdom is that books generally fall into one of three categories: entertaining, educational, or escape. On a Night of a Thousand Stars nailed all three.First, this novel taught me so much about Argentina's history and "Los Desaparecidos," the victims of a government campaign against suspected dissidents and subversives - horrific and poignant and awful beyond measure. The dark historical account made for an interesting contrast to protagonist Paloma's privileged upbringing and served as a vivid reminder that governments do unspeakable things, yet people somehow have to come to terms with their own country's history and carry on.Next, this book was quite entertaining, with an action-packed plot and well-crafted balance between past events and the narrator's present day. Paloma and other characters occasionally demonstrated a dry, understated sense of humor which made the characters more real and human. The father-daughter relationship, and the ensuing tensions between Paloma and her parents, were quite poignant. A lot happens in this book, yet I never felt confused or overwhelmed as to what was going on, thanks to the steady pacing. The book doesn't arrive at any easy answers, but I was satisfied with the level of closure I felt with regard to the various plot lines. Finally, this novel was certainly an escape. The descriptions of the lifestyles of the Argentinian elite with their polo matches, lavish parties, and exotic men and women were highly engrossing, and it was fun to be immersed in their world for a while. There was plenty of passion and steamy romance, and I was immediately riveted by the several brave, handsome, righteous male heroes. The women, too, were strong and complex. The stakes were high, and the endings weren't always happy, but there was a a beauty to the storylines that made the journey well worth taking. In short, this book made me think, and it also made me feel. I value it for both. On a Night of a Thousand Stars Kindle Online telecharger An absolutely fascinating history lesson of Argentina. The story will simply break your heart. Put it on your reading list for certain ! PDF On a Night of a Thousand Stars kindle pdf The story of the “Disappeared” during the era of the military junta that ruled Argentina in the 1970s is fascinating and horrifying. People were literally kidnapped off the street and tortured or killed on the merest of suspicions. Even the methods used to kill them were so awful that a shot in the head would have seemed refined. This is the story that Ms. Clark writes about, and it’s a doozy. There’s a bit too much romance for my taste, but Ms. Clark uses it well for purposes of her story, using it as a means of going back in time to revisit the “dirty war,” as it is called. Particularly considering that it’s her first novel, it’s pretty good. I hope she writes more on this topic. ePUB On a Night of a Thousand Stars pdf epub Poor character building. Very little historical background. The story was obvious in the first few chapters. However, the ending is heartbreaking and decently done. (PDF) Downloads On a Night of a Thousand Stars Interesting story of Argentina’s dark days. When people were abducted and later disappeared. The author uses a young woman who was adopted as a new born infant to uncover her story. Which is unknown to her and to her adopted mother. Very interesting and the end is heart wrenching.
